I'm glad that Steve Nash & the Phoenix Suns won again. This time against the New Orleans Hornets 120 - 103 in the compacted 2011 - 2012 NBA Season

I'm glad that Steve Nash reached a new milestone - being the Sun's franchise most prolific passer. He now holds the record of 6, 522 assists and counting as a Phoenix Suns. His career assist total is 9, 441. He stands to surpass Oscar Robertson who only has 46 more assists as 4th assists leader all time in the NBA.

Finally, I get to read something good about Steve Nash and my Phoenix Suns. They won over the New York Knicks that has Carmelo Anthony (although not 100%), former Sun, Amar'e Stoudemire and newly acquired Tyson Chandler.

The conspiracy theorist in me says this was a gimme win because of Phoenix former ties to now Knicks Coach Mike d'Antoni. But the Knicks themselves are in dire need of wins after their underperforming start for the season. That ridiculous thought is quickly dispelled.

Understandably, the Suns haven't been talked about this NBA 2011-2012 season because of a weak roster. But I am glad that they are still battling out there, ably lead by the unaging Nash.

If they could just squeeze in as the 8th seed on a highly competitive Western Conference, that would be an early Christmas sports present for me.

Nadal Criticizing Federer Sounds More like Sourgraping than Players' Grievance on Tour Schedule

Rafael Nadal criticized Roger Federer for being mum about the tough tour schedule of the ATP and letting other players like him to speak out and burn themselves.

I believe that in the past, Federer spoke of being amenable to a reduced tour calendar. And if I remember correctly, he even agreed to re-scheduling the Australian Open to give way to longer off season.

Calling out someone to join your cause is not the smartest way to go about it.

Nadal can not be faulted for asking the greatest of all time to be more vocal about the schedule. Tour officials will surely take notice if Federer does. But to point out how the older Federer manages the physical demands of the tour better than other players speaks of jealousy.

I researched Rafa's and Fed's results for 2011. Rafa had a 69 - 15 record while Federer had 64 - 12 last year. A difference of 8 games. 6 of those are because Rafa represented Spain in the Davis Cup. Not counting the Davis Cup & Grand Slams, Rafa entered (13) just two more tournaments than Federer (11).

Tennis is an extremely strenous sport. Nadal's style of play is punishing to the body. Novak Djokovic had his share of injuries in the latter part of 2011, too. Nadal's body also broke down early in 2009 because of a hectic 2008 that includes the Olympics. But I can not remember him going this route (calling out Federer). Why? because he's winning then?

A message to Rafa. It is a matter of taking care of your body and better schedule management to be consistent on tour and prolonging one's career. Also, if you want Federer to side with any of your advocacy or initiatives, calling him out in public is also "ungentlemanly". Rather it paints a picture of a sourgrape or worse a cry baby.

I sure hope that Federer will be motivated by this criticism for the Australian Open. Given that Fed and Rafa are on the same bracket, it would be good to at least deny Rafa of advancing to the finals.

Chicago Bulls Beats LA Lakers in the NBA Season Opener

I was fortunate to remember today is the season opener of the 2011 - 2012 NBA Season. Just in time to witness Loul Deng, Derrick Rose & the Chicago Bulls pull the rug under the Los Angeles Lakers 88 - 87.

Wow. I thought that the Lakers won it after Kobe made a contested short corner jumper to give the Lakers a seemingly safe 6 point lead. However, Deng was great on both ends of the floor in the clutch and Rose made a difficult floater over Pau Gasol as the Bulls open their campaign on a bright note.

There is actually little to draw from this opening game. The Lakers are dealing with a new coach in Mike Brown and new personnel minus Lamar Odom. Kobe even have an injured list. But still there's so much expectations with Kobe and company especially that they are opening the season at home. This loss is hard for the Lakers especially to Gasol. He gave Deng a 3-point play opportunity and then failed to block Rose's floater.

Reigning MVP Rose was adjudged the best player of the game but to me Deng was the difference maker. He should be credited for this come-from-behind victory for scoring baskets and playing superb defense, culminating on his block on Kobe's final shot attempt.

I sure missed how newly acquired Rip Hamilton played with the Bull's system and Metta World Peace, the-basketball-player-we-formerly-knew-as-Ron-Artest.

Tiger Woods , A Winner Again

Tiger Woods is finally winner again after a clutch win at the 2011 Chevron World Challenge.

After going winless in 26 tournaments that spanned over two years, Woods finally hoisted a winner's trophy, besting a spirited challenge from former Masters champion Zach Johnson and 16 other golfers. Woods birdied the last two holes, finishing 10-under 278, enroute to winning the Chevron World Challenge for the fifth time.

Woods hosts this annual golf tournament for his own Tiger Woods Foundation, donating $1.2 million for his win this year.

I actually believed that last year's Chevron challenge will be Woods' breakthrough win after going through a sex scandal, a divorce, swing & personnel changes and injuries. But he squandered a 4-shot lead entering the final round, eventually losing to 2010 US Open champ Graeme McDowell in a play-off.

The win pushes Woods' ranking in the Official World Golf Rankings to No. 21. After almost a lifetime of being no. 1, his rankings plummeted to no. 58 this year. More importantly, the win signifies that Woods is closer to being his former self.

Elsewhere in the world, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood also won. The 2012 golf season just became curiouser.

Beauty pageant? Nope.

They are the 8 top women's tennis players in the world right now. Not their usual attire but I greatly welcome the elegant change. And they will be competing for the year-end championships for women's tennis dubbed WTA Championships to be held in Istanbul, Turkey.

From the picture, I can only identify Maria Sharapova ( world no. 2) and Li Na (5). The other players that will vie for the title are; Caroline Wozniacki (1), Petra Kvitova (3), Victoria Azarenka (4), Vera Zvonareva (6), Samantha Stosur (7) & Agnieszka Radwanska.

As an asian myself, I'm rooting for the reigning French Open women's champion, Li Na.

The undisputed number one on the tennis court, Novak Djokovic, this year is now assured of taking the top ranking over 2012 as Nadal's latest loss will make him unable to surpass Djokovic on men's world rankings for the rest of 2011. If anything, it is a testament how difficult it is to be a top dog in men's tennis. And, all apologies, a further testament to the greatness of Roger Federer.But coming 2012, I hope Federer will still challenge Djokovic and Nadal. Perhaps, one grand slam more, for the road?

Andre Agassi has been inducted to the International Tennis Hall of Fame last July 9, 2011.

Rightfully so, he is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Beyond his achievements on the tennis court, his influence in the global popularity of the sport can not be under stated and his philantropical initiatives secures his place as one of the most famous and well-liked athletes in sports history.

True, there are others who outshine him in terms of career or grand slam wins. But that may be attributed to his lack of focus in the early days of his career. He was able to revive his career to become the only male singles player in history to have won all four grand slam tournaments, an Olympic Gold Medal in tennis and the ATP Tour World Championships.

In his autobiography, Agassi admitted using crystal meth and lied about it when he tested positive to avoid being penalized. But I doubt if that would significantly tarnish his legacy.

Agassi should be a source of inspiration to other athletes for coming back after falling so low in the rankings and to other sports superstars, for doing charity right at his hometown.

The newly-crowned champ, tasted wimbledon grass and gave away Novak Djokovic rackets as part of his celebration for his most recent triumph.

Djokovic's recent victory is his fifth against the great Nadal. Djokovic has turned to become the wall to Nadal's success this year, denying the spaniard 5 titles. Djokovic now owns Nadal as Nadal has owned my Federer in their head-to-head match-ups.

Now, that Djokovic tasted a wimbledon men single's title, and the wimbledon grass for that matter, he would surely be hungry for more.

Warming Up to Novak Djokovic

I feel like I'm warming up to Novak Djokovic.

In part because my favorite Roger Federer stopped - The Streak - at the 2011 French Open Semis. More so because of remembering some things I saw watching him play and a an old video of him I saw recently.

Now, I'm remembering that Djokovic applauds great shots of his opponents during games, apologizes for points won on luck and lastly, because of this video.

Granted that videos like this may only be for publicity or promotional purposes, Djokovic vibrates a genuine feeling of being loose, enjoying the moment and having fun.

Ate Gigie, would sure enjoy Novak's I Will Survive video. *wink*wink*

Unlike, Federer's very demure turn. In fact, I even liked Rafael Nadal's turn more. [BTW, Ana Ivanovic is ~~hot~~ in here.]

Novak Djokovic Adds 2011 Italian Open

There seems to be no stopping Novak Djokovic on his sublime season ~~start~~ as he added the Rome Masters/Italian Open to his streak of 37 straight victories.

The Italian Open/Rome Masters is played on clay and Djokovic once again beat world no. 1 and clay court king Rafael Nadal for the title via 6-4, 6-4 straight sets win. Along with the amazing streak is 4 consecutive finals win over Nadal, the last two on clay.

The ultimate test will be the upcoming French Open where the stakes are much higher. Right now, Djokovic appears ready to challenge Nadal's stranglehold of that grand slam.

But the French open being the most unpredictable grand slam event in tennis and produced the most surprising winners, someone may crash and spoil a Rafa - Nole finals.

[Yes, I'm calling out Roger Federer. Let's go, Fed!]

Rafael Nadal said this about Novak Djokovic moments after Djokovic beat him at the 2011 Madrid Open final.

"I came up against a great player obviously -- he's having a monster year,".

When you've just beaten the top ranked tennis player in the men's tour, the greatest clay court tennis player in history, in straight sets and in his home soil, that clinches it. Djokovic is looking like a monster on the tennis court.

Novak Djokovic's season remained perfect but beating Rafael Nadal for a title on the clay surface is the better headline. Djokovic won the Madrid Open title by dealing a rare loss to Nadal on clay, 7-5, 6-4.

The way he's playing and the confidence of beating Nadal on their last 3 finals clash, augurs well for Djokovic' chances at this year's French Open. The way I see it, Djokovic has better chance of toppling Nadal on his favorite grand slam tourmanent than Federer had on his prime.

Djokovic remains unbeaten in 2011 (30-0). He defeated Nadal for the third straight time in a finals. The Madrid Open is his 6th title of the year including the Australian Open, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, BNP Paribas Open, Sony Ericsson Open and the Serbia Open. It includes three straight wins against Nadal and Federer.

Tennis fans should look forward to Djokovic matching or breaking John McEnroe's record of 42 straight wins at the start of the 1980 tennis tour.

To match the record, Djokovic should capture his next tournament, Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, and reach the semifinals of the French Open. Coincidentally, Djokovic can break it by winning the French Open.

By then, I need to come up with another adjective.

Dallas Mavericks Beat L.A Lakers up 3-0 in West Semis @ 2011 NBA Playoffs

Wow! The Dallas Mavericks is now up 3 - 0 against the two-time defending champs Los Angeles Lakers in their Western Conference Semifinal Playoff series. I just read that the Mavs beat the Lakers in Game 3, at Dallas, by the score of 98 - 92.

Peja Stojakovic and Dirk Nowitzki fueled the win from the outside.

The Lakers haven't really looked like the contenders they ought to be and basically riding their championship reputation towards the playoffs. Yes, Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks are capable of beating the Lakers.

But by this lopsided of a series? Wow!

I can't recall Phil Jackson getting swept in a playoff series. I wonder what Kobe would do. I've heard in a pod cast, jokingly I may add, that Pau Gasol's uninspired play is due to a broken heart. That's talking about emotional injury.

Mark Cuban finally found the right deals to shore up his team. Tyson Chandler and Peja stojakovic was great acquisition this season. Dirk and Mavericks can surely exorcise the ghosts of playoff's past failures by sweeping the once mighty Los Angeles Lakers.

Uh-oh. A Mavericks-Heat finals rematch is now more seemingly possible.

Derrick Rose is MVP

Congratulations to Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls for being named the Most Valuable Player of the NBA for the regular season 2010 - 2011.

Rose became the youngest NBA player ever named MVP. A nice reward for leading his team, the Chicago Bulls to be the no. 1 team in the 2010-2011 regular season. He has followed Michael Jordan as the other Chicago Bulls player named MVP.

The Chicago Bulls passed the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs but was upset by the surging Atlanta Hawks in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Semifinal round playoff series. Worse, he sprained his left ankle in that last game.

Winning the MVP is good but winning the championship is the ultimate prize for Rose. But to do so, he needs to be 100% in uniform.

It is the same ankle he sprained against the Pacers. X-rays were negative thankfully.

If I am Derrick, I would be extremely annoyed going to check ups at this juncture of the playoffs even if I'm attended by lovely female attendants in sexy scrubs such those at http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/categories/Scrubs/Scrubs-for-Women/ .

Phoenix Suns 2011 Season Ends

One of the reasons I lost my zeal to blog about the NBA season like before was the sad state of my favorite team - the Phoenix Suns.

Today my beloved Suns ended their 2011 season with a win over bitter rivals San Antonio Spurs. Granted that Manu Ginobili suffered an injury, I do not consider this as a gimmie.

The Spurs started their three main guys - Duncan, Ginobili & Parker. A sign that the Spurs wanted to win the game and have a chance of securing through out the playoffs until the championship round. But since they lost, the Chicago Bulls holds that advantage.

I wonder what will happen to my Phoenix. But just like what they are named after, I hope that they do rise from the ashes of losing 2011 NBA Season and be the Phoenix Suns that will contend in the playoffs next year.

Charl Schwartzel emerged from highly contested final round in recent memory in Augusta to don the symbolic Green Jacket as the 2011 Masters Champion.

Casual golf fans like me never heard of him, but it sure is a great way to introduce one's self via The Masters at the famed Augusta National Golf course.

Wikipedia says that Schwartzel hails from South Africa who is actively touring the European Tour and Sunshine Tour professional golfing circuits. This is only his 2nd appearance in the Masters and he is another first time Masters and grand slam winner.

What many predicted to be a win, and perhaps a coronation stroll, for Rory McIlroy who had a four stroke lead after the third round turned out to be entirely different. 8 players had at least a share of the lead. This included, Tiger Woods who made a charged fell short in the back nine to finish his best final round in Augusta 67 but only tied for fourth just like last year.

McIlroy carded an 80 in a final round stunning collapse. I remember last year's British Open where he also carded an 80 after a great score the previous round. But at least then, the wind was mad. I think this time, he really felt the pressure of Augusta.

In the end, Charl Schwartel closed out with four straight birdies, two shots clear over Adam Scott and Jason Day to be the 2011 Masters champion.

Super Novak Djokovic

Last time I blogged about tennis, I wrote Novak Djokovic is on fire. After his magnificent 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) comeback win against world no.1 Rafael Nadal, I'd say he is more like a super nova.

Running out of description of Novak Djokovic's winning the 2011 Sony Ericsson Men's Tennis title versus Rafael Nadal in Key Biscayne, Miami is understandable.

Novak Djokovic's latest win meant he remained undefeated for the year; his fourth straight tournament title; his 26th consecutive match win; his second straight comeback finals win vs. Nadal; he's 8 - 0 against top-10-ranked opponents and that he is in serious contention for the number one ranking in men's tennis this year.

Wow and all of those isn't hyperbole! That, incidentally rhymes with Djokovic's nickname - Nole. :D

On a sad note, Djokovic win is an affirmation that my favorite Roger Federer is indeed, only just the third best tennis player in the world today.

The way Djokovic came back and won a tie break for the Sony Ericson title says a lot. Had Rafael Nadal won, I can think that the gap between world no. 2 Djokovic and Federer is not that wide. And that Federer's loss to Djokovic could be attributed to an out-of-this world streak. Federer did not even won a set or forced a set tiebreak against Nadal in their semis encounter.

Still I'm a Federer fan. It would be gargantuan task to climb back to the top of the tennis world for him given his age. But that would be the stuff to add to his legend. I just want him to disrupt this budding tennis rivalry, Rafa-Nole, every now and then especially in the grand slam events.

The current development in men's tennis isn't good for Federer's fans like me but it's good for tennis in general.

I wouldn't mind blogging about Novak Djokovic if he continues with this kind of tennis excellence. Or for that matter, any other tennis players who can treat fans to a thrilling tennis match.

2011 is shaping out to be Djokovic' year, seemingly at the expense of Roger Federer, to the gloom of die hard fans like me.

Over last week, I was keeping tab on the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California. I fought the urge to blog about it because Roger Federer is playing & I do not want to jinx him.

I was doing my regular online sports browsing this morning when I learned that Novak just won the BNP Paribas Open championship over world no. 1 Rafael Nadal, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

2011 is heaven for Djokovic.

To the sadness of Federer, die hard fans like me, Novak now seemed to have Federer's number.

If these achievements come down to Novak's confidence, it probably came from leading Serbia to the Davis cup title at the end of last year.

Well, the good thing. Roger Federer will playing for Switzerland in the Davis Cup July this year. :)

Chicago Bulls East Number One

Almost a month ago, I was happy to blog about the Chicago Bulls because I was able to watch them beat the much hyped Miami Heat.

Back then, the Bull's win for me is an indication that they are serious contenders in the Eastern conference in the play-offs.

To my surprise, the Chicago Bulls is now number one in the team standings in the Eastern Conference after their win against the Washington Wizards, 98 - 79. That is without Joakim Noah & Carlos Boozer.

Wow!

Perhaps they got more inspired seeing MJ & Scottie Pippen recently celebrate the 20th anniversary of Chicago's first NBA championship.

Well, the NBA championship is really won by the team that peaks right into the playoffs.

Though I agree that Derrick Rose should be the MVP of the regular season, (barring any major collapse of the Bulls) I'd still think the Celtics will prevail in the East though.

As for my favorite Phoenix Suns team, Captain Nash is injured and may be it is a little too late to catch the Memphis Grizzlies for the 8th place in the west.

Chicago Bulls Flexes Muscle in Contending the East, Beats the Mighty Miami Heat

Loul Deng's crucial 3 pushed the Chicago Bulls past the mighty Miami Heat, 93 - 89 as the NBA 2010 - 2011 regular season veers to its homestrecth.

I was lucky to be able to watch an important NBA game especially in the east today, the much hyped Miami Heat visited the Chicago Bulls at the United Center.

The first half was all Heat, with Lebron James ending the half rolling in a jumper, the Heat up 53 - 44. I decide to watch something else at the break.

When I switched back, the Chicago Bulls are now up 80 - 75 with less than 6 minutes to go. But James and the Heat scored 9 straight points to go up 84 - 80.

That is when the Bulls woke up.

Kyle Korver started the run with a three-pointer and then challenged Mario Chalmers' shot on the other end, leading to an offensive foul on Chalmers.

The Bulls regained the lead back on Rose's basket, 85 - 84. Deng's jumper at the top of the key and a long two by Rose, put the Bulls in control 89 - 84.

But the Heat weren't finished. Wade scores, and James completed an end-1 play to tie the game 89 - all with just 36.8 seconds left.

Carmelo Anthony Traded to Knicks

Finally, Carmelo Anthony will now be a Knick.

Reports are abound that the Denver Nuggets, the New York Knicks and in lesser extent, the Minnesota Timberwolves all agreed in a multi-player mega deal that finally put an end to the Melo-drama trade speculations.

Though the deal is yet to be formalized, the Denver Nuggets let go Carmelo Anthony to his favored city to play at [Knicks] along with Chaucey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman. In return, the Nuggets will get Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler and Timofey Mozgov plus draft pics. Minnesota, as part of this deal, will get Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph. There are other things involved but those are said to be the player movements.

Melo probably feels like leaping for joy at the top of the Empire State Building no less with this development. He has long given signs that New York is where he wants to play. Not to mention, he also get the $65 million extension.

For the price of giving four NBA starters for Anthony's talents, the New York Knicks are clearly following the blue print of the Miami Heat. And New York can still add another star come 2012.

With Melo, playing alongside Amar'e Stoudemire, the Knicks should be a shoo-in to make the playoffs in the next three seasons at least. And MSG can stand for Melo-Stoudemire Garden.

But to win a championship? they need solid bench play and, of course, defense.

Novak Djokovic of Serbia & Kim Clijsters of Belgium are the singles champion of Tennis' first major of the year, the 2011 Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic increased his men's singles grand slam title, wnning his second Australian Open Singles title after masterfully denying Andy Murray's hope of his own very first grand slam, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

Caught the replay over cable with Djokovic leading with a set and a 5 - 0 lead in the second. Murray held serve and broke Djokovic to move to 5 - 2 before Novak held serve to close the set. The third set was competitive and I felt thta Murray is still in it until he failed to held serve in a much contested game that gave Djokovic a 5 - 3 3rd set lead.

Murray, I think, is quite unlucky with a net. Him shanking so many shots while Djokovic was gifted with one. I think it helped Djokovic held serve at 4 - 3 when obviously, Murray was in great position to hit a great return.

With the loss, Murray probably felt much more, albeit unfairly, the weight of Britain, angling for its first men's single grand slam champion since Fred Perry who won in 1936.

Djokovic & Murray both still young can surely vie for more future grand slam titles if they continue to improve. I think Nadal will be injury prone and Federer is not that dominating anymore.

In the women's side, Kim Clijsters never disappointed in her favorite role, ending an amazing and inspiring campaign of Li Na, the first chinese to reach a grand slam singles final in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 finals win.

Clijster came back from a set down to win his 4th grand slam singles title and first Australian Open singles title and her first outside of the US Open.

Unlike Britain, China is probably on a high, after their very own made history and made them proud.

Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer 7-6 (3), 7-5, 6-4, at the Australian Open semis, dethroning the defending champ and gave himself a chance of repeating in this tennis grand slam event.

I was foregoing on blogging about this year's Australian Open for fear of jinxing (again) Roger Federer. But now that it happened, I'm typing this entry with a heavy heart.

After world no. 1 Rafael Nadal was eliminated by compatriot David Ferrer, I was itching to blog that the grand slam is Federer's for the taking.

But Novak Djokovic have plans of his own.

Probably more confident after defeating Federer in the US Open semis last year, Djokovic was steadier in the key moments of their match, defeating Federer in straight sets. In 2008, Djokovic also eliminated Roger enroute to winning the tournament, his only singles grand slam title, so far.

He now awaits the winner of the other semis pitting Andy Murray and David Ferrer.

NBA Injuries Hinders Championship Dreams

Any NBA team or their fans dread to see their players specially their stars donning medical scrubs. It denotes serious injury sidelining the players.

Even if injured players are taken cared of by competent men and women in lab coats & nursing uniforms, it is not good for any nba team. Even if injuries are not serious, it means missing time to play and to practice. That basically disrupts playing chemistry and momentum.

Take the case of Caron Butler of the Dallas Mavericks, seen below donning one of those scrub uniforms instead of his usual jersey. The Mavs are appearing to be a major contender when injury to Butler and then main man Dirk Nowitzki hit them. Nowitzki's recent return did not translate immediately to a victory.

Injuries can really affect the way teams achieve their peek form. Just look at the current NBA leader San Antonio Spurs, playing well because their guys are healthy, specially their big three of Duncan, Ginobili and Parker. The much-hyped Miami Heat have strung together a number of wins but tail off with Lebron's injury first and then Bosh. Same with the Celtics who are surviving while fighting off a spate of injuries.

The team who becomes healthy after the all star break going through the playoffs stands a great chance of ending the season with an NBA championship title.

Roger Federer won the 2010 ATP World Tour title after defeating World no. 1 and arch-rival Rafael Nadal 6 - 3, 3 - 6, 6 - 1 at the O2 Arena in London.

Federer ended an average-by-his-standard tennis season with a win the same way he opened it with a major title - the Australian Open grand slam crown in January.

In between, he lost his grand-slam semis streak in the French Open, lost in the quarterfinals of his favorite Wimbledon, lost in the semis in the US Open and another finals lost to Nadal in the Madrid Masters in May.

Even though Nadal is only his his first ATP world tour final played in hardcourts & needed to work harder to get past Andy Murray in the semis, Federer's great win in 2010 ATP World Tour finals displayed a fine form that can do wonders for Roger (and his confidence against Nadal) going to next season and aspiring to reclaim the no. 1 ranking in the Tennis world.

The Phoenix Suns defeated the Houston Rockets 123 - 116 in Houston bolstered by the return of its star and leader, Steve Nash, into action.

Steve Nash did not played in the last two games because of a groin injury. His return is timely as he helped the Phoenix Suns stop its 3 game losing skid. He scored 24 points and dished out 9 assist.

My Phoenix Suns is now again at .500 winning percentage (7-7) which in the ultra-competitive western conference hardly gets you into the postseason.

Jason Richardson led the Suns in scoring with 34 points with 7 three-pointers, off-season acquisition Hedo Turkoglu had 5, Channing Frye had 4, Goran Dragic had 3, Steve Nash had 2 and Jared Dudley added one. The Phoenix Suns almost match the record 23 made treys set by the Orlando Magic.

My sports weekend was great after Manny Pacquiao's facial drubbing of Antonio Margarito is followed by my Phoenix Suns returning the favor to the Lakers who already beat them at home this season.

I know 22 of 40 will not be on a nightly basis but maybe this is the identity that my Suns can embrace specially that they do not have an inside presence. A run and (3 point) gun team.

This is the first time that I noticed my Phoenix Suns move above the .500 mark in win percentage. I hope that beating the defending champs will boost their confidence and continue winning.

Hawks Suffer First Loss from Phoenix Suns

Steve Nash & the Phoenix Suns have dealt the Atlanta Hawks their first loss of the NBA Season 2010 - 2011 via a 118 - 114 win on the road.

That's more like it.

My Phoenix Suns had a balanced attack where 6 players scored in double figures to have their first win streak of the early NBA season and even their win-loss slate at 3 - 3.

Jason Richardson led Phoenix with 21 while Captain Steve had 19 points & 15 assists, including four important endgame free throws to seal the win.

The Atlanta Hawks started the season 6 - 0 and previously was the only undefeated Eastern conference team. Major offseason signee Joe Johnson led the Hawks with 34 points.

Phoenix Suns, Steve Nash Lose NBA 2010-2011 Opener to Portland Trailblazers, 106 - 92

I resume blogging here simultaneous with the opening of one of the most anticipated NBA season in recent memory - the NBA 2010 - 2011 its 65th season. On a sad note at that as Phoenix lost to the Portland Trail Blazers, 106 - 92.

As usual, I'm rooting for the Phoenix Suns to do well even if making the playoffs is unlikely in the demanding Western Conference.

I was in pins and needle as I monitored the Suns opener against the Portland Trailblazers on the net. Smiling on the time that they took the lead but quickly surrendered it and eventually losing to the Nicolas Batum led Blazers, 106 - 92.

Captain Steve had a lot of turnovers. I guess even the great Canadian needs adjustment in setting the tempo for his new teammates.

Well, even the much heralded Miami Heat lose their opening game of the season. Go Suns!

I can't wait to see who will prevail among this four teams and reach the finals of UAAP Season 73 Basketball. Barring any upsets, I am putting my bet on an FEU vs Ateneo final.

And since I am a small guy, I am rooting for RR Garcia leading the Tamaraws to a long overdue championship.

Turkey Advance to FIBA World Championship Quarterfinals

Hedo Turkoglu and the hometeam Turkey, shot their way to the quarterfinals over error-prone France, 95 - 77 in the FIBA World Basketball Championships.

Much to the delight of over 15, 000 fans cheering them all game long, Turkey unleashed its attack bridging the middle quarters. They shot great from the outside and capitalized on France's turn overs and missed shots.

Main gunner Turkoglu was hitting in all places, finishing with 20 points. The turks won despite Ersan Ilyasova's pedestrian game.

It was kinda disappointing for France because they showed promise after upsetting defending world champion Spain in the group elimination phase.

Turkey will next face Slovenia.

Ateneo Blue Eagles Survived Inspired UE Red Warriors 80-73 UAAP Season 73 1st Round Eliminations

Defending Champions Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles faced an inspired University of the East Red Warriors before prevailing 80 - 73 to end the first round of eliminations of the ongoing UAAP Season 73 Senior's Mens basketball tournament.

Boosted by their first win, the UE Red Warriors kept the Defending champion in check even leading at the end of 3 quarters before succumbing to a superior ADMU line up in the end game.

With the likes of Acibar, Razon and Resopa contributing, apart from the expected production of Paul Lee, James Martinez & Raffy Reyes, the Red Warriors almost upset the three-peat seeking Eagles.

Eric Salamat opened the fourth quarter with two treys, before Monfort's own triple gave the lead to Ateneo 66 - 65.

The downfall of UE started when Sam Razon, playing the best game of his career yet as a Warrior, fouled out before giving UE its last taste of the lead after an end one play, 69 - 66.

With Paul Lee the only option, the Eagles just clamped on the main Red warrior and outscored UE, 14 - 4 the rest of the way to win the rematch of last year's finals. Eric Salamat paced the Eagles with 23 points

The win gave ADMU a 5 - 2 win-loss card to finish the first round tied in second place with Adamson University who earlier defeated DLSU.

With the loss, UE's hope of reaching Final Four grew slimmer. They would need at least 6 wins in the second round to even have a chance at the last final four seat. But they could draw motivation from this game that they almost upset the defending champions.

Juan Manuel Marquez retained his lightweight world title in a rematch against Juan Diaz in a one-sided boxing clinic of a fight. Marquez won via unanimous decision 118 - 110, 117 - 111, 116 - 112 and retained the title he took away from Diaz himself in the bout last year that became Fight of the Year 2009.

Having no other sports to watch, I switched to the local telecast of this Marquez-Diaz fight. But I just saw how a great ring tactician that Marquez is totally dominated the younger Diaz.

I think it was in the 10th round that Diaz showed some energy off his feet. But there was no rally or any thing of that sort that happened.

As for Juan Manuel Marquez, he still yearns for another shot at Manny Pacquiao.

The BMEG Derby Ace Llamados advance to the semifinals of the 2010 PBA Fiesta Conference after outlasting Rain or Shine Elastopainters 105 - 100 in overtime of their sudden-death Game 5 Quarterfinals match.

The Llamados let the Elastopainters into the ballgame but recovered just in time. Rain or Shine had a chance to win it outright but Sol Mercado's 3 was way off line with the scored tied 90 all after 4 quarters.In the extension period, their defense and experience took over to finally repulsed the Rain or Shine.

Tony Washam, who just came after Game 3 of the quarterfinal series, led the Llamados with 49 points. Raffy Reavis, KG Canaleta & James Yap provided crucial scoring support. James Yap, with bruised left eye & not-so-spectacular scoring night, proved steady on the free throw line, knocking in six free throws in the overtime period.

Rain or Shine meanwhile became too predictable in the endgame. Almost exclusively going to Sol Mercado on isolation plays. That made thing easier for the Llamados defense.

Gabe Norwood tried to lead the Elastopainters in OT, his last two points coming from the free throw line kept his team within a basket, 100 - 102 with 17.2 seconds to go.

BMEG was able to waste important seconds in the inbound play before James Yap was fouled. J. Yap connected both free throws to basically to put the game beyond Rain or Shine's reach.

BMEG will face the San Miguel Beeermen in the semifinals. BMEG is just another name for the Purefoods franchise. That semifinal tussle will be another one between two storied and pioneering PBA rivals.

Fan note: I'm really glad to catch this exciting game after watching lopsided UAAP first round baskeball match between DLSU & UE.

Glad to see former UE warrior, Marcy Arellano being called to play in this PBA game, even getting a steal.

David "Big Papi" Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox won this year's All Star HomeRun Derby held at the Los Angeles Angels Stadium in Anaheim.

Big Papi has recently regained his old slugger-form and his win in this hitting-balls-out-of-the-park will further boost his confidence. He scored 21 HRs to reach the final round. In the final he hit 11 against the 5 hit by the other finalist Hanley Ramirez.

The Homerun derby is annual spectacle of the All Star Week of the Major League Baseball. The goal of the derby is to hit as many balls as possible out of the ballpark. Foul balls and infield hit are considered out. Every participants are given only 10 outs.

There are two rounds. Top 4 homerun hitters will advance to second round. Score of the 4 in the second round will be added to their score in the first round. The top two will advance to the finals.

The World Cup is the ultimate football event and rivals the Olympics in terms of global fame.

Football or soccer is not a big thing here in our country because the game is not as action as basketball or boxing. But the sportsfan in me can't help but pick a side. I like orange but I will be rooting for Spain. I am certain but there maybe some spanish blood running in my veins. I maybe very well be a half-spanish, half-bread er... Filipino. Hehehe!!!

Seriously, I do hope this sport will gain popularity here in the Philippines. It is one of the sports where height is not a big factor. I believe that in terms of speed and stamina, Filipinos can be great in this sport.

Sadly, I think only big Universities promote this sport. I hope Google's doodle can impressed upon Filipino web searches to embrace the sport.

FEU Tamaraws beat Ateneo Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 73

The FEU Tamaraws won over the Ateneo Blue Eagles 72 - 69 for their first game in the UAAP Season 73 Men's Senior Basketball tournament.

Sophomore RR Garcia's game-long scoring brilliance spearheaded FEU Tamaraw's attack while veterans Reil Cervantes & Aldrech Ramos provided timely hustle plays to turn back a formidable Ateneo side.

Despite losing big men Al Hussaini and Noy Baclao to graduation, the Blue Eagles was just one basket short of sending the game to overtime. Niko Salva's undergoal stab was just short to tie the game.

FEU is one the favorites my pick to take the crown this season although I haven't seen the likes of DLSU or UE play.

Defending Ateneo Blue Eagles is seeking a three-peat in UAAP Basketball while DLSU is UAAP Season 73's host.

UFC 116 - Brock Lesnar Still Undisputed Heavyweight Champ, Survives Early Carwin Attack

Brock Lesnar withstood the on-slaught of UFC's stoppage artist and bounced back with a triangle arm choke to push Shane Carwin to submission and defend his undisputed heavyweight title in UFC 116.

Brock Lesnar survived a bloddied face, and powerful pummeling from interim champion Shane Carwin in the first round. Carwin landed powerful punches but kinda tapered off a little in attack. Lesnar successfully held on to the end of the first round.

Carwin who has yet to made past first round (except today), and punch himself out is not the same in the second round. Lesnar capitilize and initiated a take down. After which, Lesnar was able to secure an arm triangle choke that led to Carwin's tap out.

Sidenotes:
Carwin is the favorite and has more fans inside the sold-out MGM Grand.

The San Sebastian College Recoletos claimed the 2010 Fil-oil Flying V Invitational Basketball tournament after an exciting win over last year's champion Far Eastern University Tamarraws, 79 - 78.

I caught the 2010 Fil-Oil Flying V Invitational Basketball championship game via channel-flipping. The San Sebastian Stags were fighting defending champion Far Eastern University Tamaraws for the title.

By then it was in the fourth quarter and the score tied at 55.

I was glad to have my first glimpse of the guys FEU will be fielding in the upcoming UAAP basketball competition. RR Garcia, Aldrech Ramos, JR Cawaling and Reil Cervantes are familiar faces. A new player surnamed Romeo was being praised by the commentators as a big addition to FEU's basketball campaign.

San Sebastian will be defending their NCAA basketball crown starting in two weeks time, the start of NCAA Season 86 and is coached by one of the greatest players in the PBA, coach Ato Agustin. They have this rookie named Calvin Abueva, that is very active on both sides of the court. No wonder, he won the MVP of the tournament.

The game was nip and tuck and very much enjoyable and exciting. I wouldn't have mind if it went to overtime. It was just a bit sad that it ended anti-climactic.

Initially, it was a duel between Abueva of SSC-R and Garcia of FEU. In the end game, veterans from both squad contributed.

With the scored tied at 78, a foul was called in the scramble for the loose ball. Raymundo made 1 of 2 free throws. A good inbounds play by FEU allowed them to come up with a good attempt but Aldrech Ramos long two missed its target.

I was siding with FEU but I admit that Stags deserve the win and the title, becoming the first team from the NCAA side to rule this annual pre-college-hoops-season tournament.

The Phoenix Suns schedule continues...

Not given much consideration at the start of the season, the surprising Suns are now scheduled to face the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals in the ongoing 2010 NBA Playoffs.

Even Coach Phil Jackson of the Lakers is now taking notice of the Suns that he virtually started the scheduled series against Suns by calling Phoenix' Steve Nash ball-handling as palming.

Palming the basketball isn't allowed in the NBA. Coach Jackson practically says that Nash is getting away with this violation as he orchestrate the Suns offense.

The Lakers without a doubt is the overwhelming favorite in this series. The Suns' fast-tempo offense often facilitated by Nash is one of the few weapons the Suns have.

By undermining Nash' way of dribbling the ball, Coach Jackson obviously want to distract Nash's mental preparation and also call the attention of the referees to take a closer look. The Zenmaster is still at the top of his game including psywar. This is the same thing he did on Oklahoma Thunder's Kevin Durant.

Steve Nash articulately responded by calling Coach Poppovic the best coach in the league instead of Jackson who has more championships.

I hope this work on my Suns favor. After all these unfortunate playoff endings, I hope the basketball gods, if there are any, would punish the Lakers and make all the referees call palming more against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. LOL!!!

Seriously, I see the Lakers advancing to the next round even without Andrew Bynum. All I wish to see are competitive exciting games and not the massacre imposed by the Orlando Magic to the Atlanta Hawks. If the Suns schedule continues up to the NBA finals, I wouldn't mind taking it as my early christmas gift.

2010 NBA Playoffs - Lakers: One Win Away to Conference Finals

Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers held for 111 - 110 win over the Utah Jazz and take a commanding 3 - 0 Series lead in the 2010 NBA Playoffs - Western Conference Semifinals.

Actually, I only caught the latter part of the game.

Kobe Bryant practically won it for his team, hitting a clutch 3 and two free throws to put the Lakers up by 3. In the next play, Derek Fisher fouled Deron Williams who sank his two free throws with less than 5 secs left.

In the next Lakers' possession, Artest and Fisher miscued on the inbounds play to give the ball back to Utah. The Jazz had a chance to win it but Williams missed on a long jumpshot and Wes Matthews tip did not convert, allowing the Lakers to escape.

Had the Lakers lost, Ron Artest would probably be the goat. He botched a clutch corner three, threw the ball away and failed to defend Williams well.

Rafael Nadal announced he is back to form on his best tennis surface by winning his sixth consecutive title at the 2010 Monte Carlo Masters. He last won a tournament in May 2009.

Rafa was in his old overpowering form as he demolished compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the finals 6-0, 6-1. He is the only player to win a tournament 6 years straight since 1968, when tennis became a professional sport.

Nadal is acknowledge as the best clay court tennis player of his generation, winning the ultimate clay tournament & grand slam French Open four successive times, 2005 - 2008. Last year he was beaten by Roder Soderling in the quarterfinals. Roger Federer became the eventual champion and completed a career grand slam.

The NBA 2010 Playoffs is now upon us. After 82 games, the real season begins in the NBA as 16 teams are rewarded with a chance to win the 2009 - 2010 championship.

Here are the NBA 2010 playoffs first round match-ups:

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Chicago Bulls

The best team in the regular season spearheaded by the season MVP, Lebron James. The Bulls who caught the last ticket to the playoffs needs a miracle bigger than Shaq to pull an upset. Although the Bulls gave us the best first round match-up last year and they were able to beat the Cavs once in the regular season, they will be having a hard time matching up with the Cavs' personel. They would be lucky to get two wins against Lebron's team.

Orlando Magic vs. Charlotte Bobcats

Featuring two of the top defensive teams of the regular season, this series will most likely be won by the Magic. The Bobcats are off to their franchise's first ever play-off appearance thanks to Larry Brown and the trade that brought them Stephen Jackson. Only Captain Jack has the playoff reps among the Bobcats.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks would probably have a chance if Andrew Bogut did not get injured. Coach Skiles has his hands full in extending the surprise run of the "Fear the Deer" legions.

Boston Celtics vs. Miami Heat

Dywane Wade and the Heat will surely like their chances againstthe aged Celtics having the homecourt advantages. In the regular season, the Celtics lost a lot of home games in double figures and surrendering big leads as well. Wade should be motivated enough to surpass what Derrick Rose serve on the Celtics last year in the playoffs.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

The defending champs are shoo-ins to a return trip to the Finals most of the regular season, until it seemed to sputter in the end. The Thunder are overachieving young guys which will probably makes it a little harder for Kobe and the Lakers to advance. Something they would need in facing tougher teams.

Dallas Mavericks vs. San Antonio Spurs

The Mavericks appears to have the best line up to sneak past the defending champs but they would need to pass by the Spurs. Manu Ginobili is on fire and a solid Tim Duncan and well-prepared coach Pop, the Spurs smells capable of an upset.

Phoenix Suns vs. Portland Trailblazers

A Roy-less blazers should be an easier matchup for the streaking Suns.They should get the inspiration from their defensive win over the Blazers last March 21.

Denver Nuggets vs. Utah Jazz

This is the other series where upset is most likely. The Nuggets lost out the second seed after appearing legitimate contenders for most of the season. No thanks to Coach Karl's battle against cancer. The Jazz are playing sweet music but they need Boozer to advance.

I wish that my Phoenix Suns can reach the conference finals in the NBA 2010 Playoffs. And if they are not facing the Lakers by then, Steve Nash would probably earn his first NBA finals trip. The safe bet still goes to a Kobe - Lebron duel in the finals.

The 2010 Masters Green Jacket has already been worn by Phil Mickelson when I woke up early to watch the final round from the start. Arggh!

Darn, my time conversion suck big time. I thought 2 pm eastern is 7 am here in Manila. Aside from being blog material, I was curious if Tiger Woods coming from behind could finally win a major championship. So, I planned to wake up early even its an off-work day for me.

Well, as I flip channels, growing iritated by the minute, I just thought our cable provider does not have the channel broadcasting the major golf championship. My day starting on a bad note.

When I fired up my browser. It dawned on me why I cannot find its coverage. It is already done and through. There he is, on ESPN homepage, lefty Phil donning his 3rd green jacket aided by 2009 winner Angel Cabrera.

As a consolation, I saw some parts of the 3rd round where Phil started his surge. His eagle,eagle and almost-eagle binge did the trick & had the hallowed August grounds rocking. With perhaps all the patrons at the famed Augusta golf course rooting for him today, he overcame overnight leader Lee Westwood's one shot lead, shooting 67 to finish 12 under for the tournament.

Lee Westwood is probably Golf's hearbreak kid, finishing close again. Here's hoping he finally get at least one major championship. I think a British Open trophy will be more meaningful for him.

As for Tiger, he never made the charge I was curious to see. He finished tied for 4th, 5 shots more than Phil.

It is a good thing that the Golf gods, if there's any, of Augusta favored a family-oriented man whose wife and mother are battling breast cancer.

Sidenotes:

Housemate Apol asked once if we'll ever get to play golf. Last year, I almost went to a golf driving range with best buddy, Ranel. His boss introduced him to the sport. But he soon left for Saudi.

For me, playing golf is not that a far-fetch idea. What I'm more concerned about is, if we can enjoy it as much as playing badminton or bowling. Golf is more of a silent and meditating sport. I don't think we will be allowed to cheer, jeer and laugh out loud among ourselves in a golf course.

And if the Golf gods are listening er, browsing, I sure wish to stand on Augusta National famed Golf course in this lifetime.

NCAA 2010 Final Four Sunday: Butler & Duke Advance to Finals

Butler executed a superb defense and rode on the game-long brilliance of Gordon Hayward to defeat the more favored Michigan State 52 - 50 and advance to the 2010 Division 1 NCAA basketball championship for the first time in school history.

Dubbed the cinderella of the tournament, Butler continues its impressive run at their homestate no less. If they do win the championship, it will the first time the home team takes the trophy since UCLA in 1975.

Butler's defense flustered the Michigan State starters to 16 turn overs and foul trouble limiting its production. The first half ended tied at 28 and the Bulldogs allowed the Spartans less with only 22 on the second half.

Gordon Hayward displayed a game-long brilliance the stuff of great amateur players, none more crunch than in the end game. His short stab gave the Bulldogs a three point lead. He forced Spartan big man Green to an airball and secured the last defensive rebound to help his team hang on to a 52 - 50 lead.

Butler now awaits the winner of Duke vs West Virginia for the NCAA Basketball Championship in April 5.

The other semifinal was a boring one as traditional NCAA powerhouse Duke University methodically shot down the challenge of West Virginia 78 - 57.

The NCAA Finals will be between David ( Butler ) and Goliath ( Duke ). Duke will be heavily-favored to win but the cinderella win of Butler will surely be heartwarming.

After the first semifinal game, a video montage of the 1979 NCAA title game was shown by our local cable channel. It was between Larry Bird's Indiana and Magic Johnson's Michigan State with Magic's team prevailing.

Magic's eyes as he recalls that historic game is all you need to look at. I feel that he sincerely cherishes that championship more than any other he'd won.

For Larry Bird, I can only admire more for leading his school 33 - 0 prior to that finals game. He wishes that he could have given more in that game to give his school the championship that wasn't meant to be.

NBA 2009 - 2010 : Bobcats Outhustle Bucks in OT

The Charlotte Bobcats outhustled the Milwaukee Bucks in another overtime game 87 - 86 in the homestretch of the NBA 2009 - 2010 season.

The win pushed the Bobcats to number 5 in the Eastern Conference and moved them closer to a first ever playoff appearance in franchise history. This kind of games will at least give them a bit of a feel on what its like to be in a playoff atmosphere.

The Bucks led most of the way until Steve Graham hits a 3. However, John Salmons hit a 3 himself to tie it all up going into the fourth quarter.

The game turned ugly early in the fourth with misses, turnovers, offensive fouls. The crowd went alive after Stephen Jackson breaks the tie with hook, 73 - 71. After Bogus ties it again with tip-in, Jackson is at it again with 3. 76 - 73.

Jennings hit a corner 2 to nudge the Bucks closer 76 - 75. Raymond Felton hits a floater on the other end. Bogut sinks two free throws to keep Bucks close with 1:09 to play.

The next sequence typically shows why the Bobcats deserve to win this game. Felton misses but Charlotte was able to recover the ball and calls for time. On the ensuing play, Boris Diaw drives, misses and again recovers the ball. After two Jennings foul, Felton is at the free throw line for two. His first shot rattles first before sinking making the home crowd a bit uneasy. Then he makes the next smoothly.

After a timeout, Salmon ties the game with another 3, 80 all with still 10.6 ticks left. The Bobcats fails to score on the possession, its overtime.

In overtime, the Bobcats prove to be a step faster to the ball or the ball just bounced kinder to them because its their homecourt.

Bucks score first in OT courtesy of Carlos Delfino. A Tyson Chandler putback slam ties it anew. Mbah Oute steals the ball and scores on the break to put Bucks on top. Felton ties the game again 84 all.

Both teams exchange turn overs before Captain was at it again. Knocking in a huge 3 to put the Bobcats ahead, 87 - 84. Salmons answered with a 2 on the lane, 87 - 86.

But the Bobcats will hang on. Felton misses on a drive but Tyson Chandlers taps the ball out to almost half court and the Bucks failed to foul as time expired.

Sidelights: Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown was ejected on the 2nd quarter. Saw Bobcat owner MJ high-fiving Captain Jack for a good job despite being bothered by some injury.

Sony Ericson Open Tennis - Federer Advance

Roger Federer advances to the Fourth round of the on-going Sony Ericson Open tennis after a sloppy win over Florent Serra.

Tennis has been on the backseat after the Australian Open won by Federer. With the March Madness on the Final Four stage, the NBA closing to its postseason and The Masters beckoning, it is not hard to understand why the on-going Sony Ericson Open Tennis championship is almost under the radar.

Two-time winner of the event, Roger Federer was taken to two tie-break sets by an unheralded Florent Serra 7 - 6 (2), 7 - 6 (3) before advancing in the Sony Ericson Open where he will next face Thomas Berdych in the fourth round.

Well, Federer can afford to play half-heartedly if he so desires given that it is not a grand slam event.

But here's a new motivation for the world number one. A dream Sony Ericson Open Tennis championship match looms against Rafael Nadal if both he and Federer take care of their respective brackets. I hope I get to watch this one.

On a side note, this is the first time I saw Federer donning orange tennis shirt.

NBA 2009 - 2010 : Bobcats Trumps Wizards in OT

The Charlotte Bobcats moved closer to a first ever play-off berth by repulsing the Washington Wizards in overtime 95 - 86 in Washington.

The Bobcats are coming from two successive close losses. It seemed like they will suffer the same fate after allowing the Wizards to send the game to overtime. This time they were able to hang tough.

The Bobcats outscored the Wizards in the extension period 13 - 4 to finally secure the win. The wizards downfall aided by the fouling out of Al Thornton and Javale McGee.

Al Thornton earlier tied the game 82 - all with a step back three.

NBA 2009 - 2010 : Phoenix uses Defense to beat Portland

My Phoenix Suns is not really known for defense but the way they zoned out the Portland Trailblazers in the fourth quarter proved to be the key as they win 93 - 87 and strengthen their playoff seedings.

When I tuned in the Suns were staying with the Blazers in a highly defensive third quarter. So, I flicked over to some other TV program. It was the fourth quarter when I returned, Dudley scored 8 points, Nash found Grant Hill on the fast break twice and the Suns were up by 8 with a little over four minutes to go.

Brandon Roy scored on traffic to cut the bleeding after a Camby free throw. Hill answered back with two free throws to put Phoenix up by 7, 88 - 81 with a less than two minutes.

Stoudemire added a free throw with more than a minute to go. Roy attacked the inside and netted a foul from Hill, knocking in two free throws to move the Blazers closer in 6, 89 - 83.

Nash throws the ball away but the Blazers failed to connect a three on the break. Batum scored a free throw. Suns call for time with only 34.5 ticks to go.

Suns turned the ball over with another 8 sec back court violation to give hope to the blazers. Roy scores on a 3 to cut the lead to 2, 89 - 87.

Batun then fouls Nash iwith 19.5 seconds left. But Nash extends the lead to four by taking care of the free throws.

Suns once again showed their improved defense as they denied Roy the ball. Miller forced a three and Hill finished them off with two free throws, 93 - 87.

Sidelight: Nash displaying his soccer skills, to bring the ball to the referee during in bounds. Phoenix wore LOS SUNS on their uniforms.

Lebron James is fulfilling what he said some time ago. Number 23 should only be MJ's number. It is said that he has already applied to the NBA to wear number 6.

Being regarded by many since his younger days to be the next basketball great, James can not help but be compared to MJ. All the more when he wore jersey number 23 when he turned pro.

I guess it's a class act to pay tribute to greatness. And it shows that James doesn't want just to be called the next Jordan especially that he has yet to win an NBA championship. He wants fans to witness his very own greatness.

I would guess that Lebron chose 6, a number he wore during the olympics, because it is his the first major championship that he won so far in his career.

It remains to be seen though if other players using 23 would follow James' act.

2010 NBA Slam Dunk Contest Suck!

The 2010 NBA Slam Dunk contest suck and set a new low. Imagine Nate Robinson becoming the first three-time champion of this kind of competition being somewhat tainted for earning it against inferior slam dunkers and coming up with a not-so-spectacular dunk himself.

It's fortunate that we now have youtube. I went on to wash away my disappointment in watching this year's NBA Slam Dunk contest by looking for arguably the greatest slam dunk competition ever in the history of the NBA All Star Weekend - The 1988 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

I was surprised to learn that Clyde Drexler also participated in that year. Anyways, it was about Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins coming out with great slam dunks one after another. MJ might have won the contest because the NBA held it in Chicago, but I feel that there's really something in the way MJ hangs in the air that puts Nique's powering slams in pale comparison.

My top three favorite slam dunkers are Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins and Vince Carter.

I hope Commissioner Stern & the NBA will do something for the fans in next year's NBA Slam Dunk Contest. They ought it fans like me to come up with participants that can entertain us either with dunks or at least with their personality.

That's for you too, Lebron. If you care enough not just for money, championships or fame, you ought to ask yourself if this is the kind of show the NBA fans deserve to see in a slam dunk contest.

Back to this year's All Star festivities in Dallas, TX. I was glad that my favorite player Steve Nash went on to win the NBA Skills challenge against a much younger crop of participants. It's not a totally disappointing day for me. hehehe!!!

Paul Pierce won the 3 point shooting contest, becoming the next Celtics to win it after Larry Legend Bird won it, I think thrice in a row. I thought that rookie Stephen Curry will win it because of his fine form. I guess he just tired out in the end.

Federer conquers Hewitt, advance to quarterfinals of 2010 Aussie Open

I finally got the chance to watch Roger Federer in action today at the 4th round of this year's Australian Open. Luckily, I was not able to jinx him. Hehehehe!!!

Federer was facing Australia's own Leyton Hewitt who tried so hard but Federer is just so good prevailing with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 almost clinical win. I can't help but get in awe everytime Federer hits a beautiful shot.

I just hope he gets a rematch with Rafael Nadal on the finals, and this time ending up smiling rather than the one crying like last year.

My First NBA Game this Season

Finally, I get to catch a live NBA game this 2009-2010 season.

It was a game between the Celtics and the Bulls who figured in the most memorable series in last season's NBA playoffs.

Considering that Kevin Garnet is back and the Celts added Rasheed Wallace on their roster, I was expecting the Celts to run roughshod the Bulls even at the latter's homefloor.

But for the first two quarters, the Bulls played good enough to keep in step with the Celts, aided by a subpar shooting of Paul Pierce. The Celtics finally got away in the third quarter.

Every time Coach Vinny del Negro is shown on the screen, I amusingly thought that he will call a Flying B play, kinda like Emilio Estevez in the Mighty Ducks movies. Hehehe!!!

I also got the first glimpse of Rasheed Wallace in green uniform, kinda tamed looking, and obligingly making a three just like his ol' Piston days.

By the start of the fourth quarter, all the Celtics starters except Rondo were cooling their heels at the bench.

Final score of this NBA regular season game: Boston wins 106 - 80

2009 UAAP Men's Basketball Final Four Complete

After the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles win over the Far Eastern University Tamaraws last night 74 - 73, the Final Four of the 2009 UAAP Men's Senior Basketball competition is now complete and the semifinal pairings cast.

The Ateneo Blue Eagles will face the fading UST Growling Tigers and appears to easily march into the finals. Unless, coach Pido can pull a major ace up his sleeves, his wards would stand no chance against the defending champs.

The other semifinal match will pit the FEU tamaraws and the surging UE Red Warriors. The Warriors was able to avenged their first round defeat against the Tamaraws in a convincing fashion. The Tams should be wary of an upset and must take care of the Warriors right in the first game. Otherwise, a do-or-die second game will only increase the Warriors confidence.

I am expecting an ATENEO - FEU final and wishing the Tamaraws to win.

US Open 2009 Womens Semifinal Result | Clijster through the Finals, Serena Williams out cos of Unsportmanslike point penalty

Comebacking mom Kim Clijster continues her amazing run at the 2009 US Open Womens Single Tennis Championships as she defeated defending champ Serena Williams in a terrific match with the most bizaare ending 6-4 7-5 to advance to the Women's Final.

Clijsters played a superb game winning the first set 6 - 4.

On the second set, Clijster, still up at 4 - 3, had a double breakpoint against the serving Williams. However, Williams came up with two big aces to level to deuce and added another to erase another breakpoint and level the match.

With Clijster up 6 - 5, Serena was called for a foot fault on serve. She got mad on the line umpire that called it. The chair umpire called the line umpire. After which, a point penalty was given to Serena which led to her losing the game and the match at 7 - 5.

Later, Caroline Wozniacki advance to the final after defeating fellow 19 year old Wickmayer.

UAAP 72 Basketball Results | UE, DLSU prevails over respective foes in 2 OT

The UE Red Warriors and the DLSU Green Archers proved to be tougher as each prevailed after two overtime periods over separate foes in the first round of eliminations in Men's Basketball of UAAP Season 72

The favored UE Red Warriors overcame a slow start, and a determined but hard-luck Adamson Falcons squad to post a a 95 - 91 win.

Paul Lee bounced back from a below-par performance in their previous game with a superb all-around game of 23 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists. He fed teammate Pari Llagas with a long-court past for the go ahead basket 93 - 91 in the 2nd OT.

The Falcons continue its luckless season as they lost another close match. They started the game well, and fought back hard on the fourth quarter to force overtime. Rookie Cabrera starred for the Falcons in the fourth quarter but proved to be not enough.

UE improved its slate to 3-2 to stay close to the leaders.

In the second game, DLSU came back from 17 points down to score an upset of sorts over the UST growling Tigers.

The Tigers went comfortably ahead in the third quarter. But rookie Arvie Bringas started the rally with a three point conversion before the quarter ended to cut the deficit to a more manageable 12 point lead.

In the fourth quarter, DLSU played superb defense to catch UST. Kish Co tied the game at 82 all to force the first overtime.

PJ Barua, hit his first field goal of Season 72, a trey, to tie the game at 90 all with 5.5 seconds left in the first OT. UST failed to convert in the next play that signalled the 2nd OT.

In the second overtime, the Green Archers limited the Tigers to just one Camus 2-point field goal to notch their fourth straight win.

The Tigers was the more favored team on this one, given that they have two great starters in Ababou and Mirza while DLSU has a lot young players.

But DLSU still have adefensive system that proved enough to stop the Tigers' top players. The win also showed that DLSU should still be included in the contenders list.

The win also puts the Archers in a confident morale as they will be facing next the top two teams at least on paper, Ateneo and FEU.

2009 UAAP Basketball | Defending Champ Ateneo opens campaign edging FEU 63 - 59

The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles opened up its back-to-back title campaign in 2009 UAAP Basketball by beating one of the highly touted contenders, Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 63 - 59.

FEU, this year's UAAP host, fed off from the crowd to take an 8 - 0 lead. But the Eagles clamped down on defense while Eric Salamat and last year's MVP, Rabeh Al-Hussaini led the Eagles counter attack. Kirk Long, Jai Reyes and 2008 Rookie of the Year, Ryan Buenafe joined the fray to give Ateneo a 17 - 11 advantage after the first quarter.

An inspired Ateneo Second unit shot gave the Eagles a big lift on the 2nd quarter as they padded the lead to 11, 34 - 23. The Eagles displayed an outside shooting they are capable off as Eman Monfort hit two and Buenafe, Niko Salva and Jai Reyes each had one three-point conversion. Only a good performance by Aldrech on the defensive allowed FEU to inch closer. Ramos blocked two shots and connected on a fade away. Ateneo took a 40 - 29 lead at the half.

Reil Cervantes of FEU scored 4 quick points at the start what would be a frenetic 3rd quarter.Last year's top swatters, Nonoy Baclao and Ramos each had defensive moments in this quarter. Stocky-built Noundu also demostrated that he can be a good on ball defender. Barroca tied it at 44 all before Eric Salamat gave the lead back to Ateneo on a fastbreak lay up of his own. The quarter ended with Ateneo still up but only be 3 points, 50 - 47.

The fourth quarter was more of a grind out defensive quarter. Ramos tied game at 54 all. But the Blue Eagles scored the next 7 points with only a little over a minute left in the game. But the Tamarraws were not yet finished. Ramos completed a three-point play on a put back basket and Reil Cervantes scored on a drive to cut the lead to two, 59 - 61. Buenafe added a free-throw before rookie Garcia missed a potential game tying trey. Hussaini finished the scoring 63 - 59 in favor of Ateneo.

FEU has two promising rookies to watch out for, RR Garcia and Nioundo (did not get the complete and accurate name).

Roger Federer breaks Sampras' all time record, Gets 15th in Wimbledon

Roger Federer finally broke a resilient Andy Roddick in the 5th Set of another memorable Wimbledon final to capture the 2009 Wimbledon crown , his 6th and more importantly his 15th Singles Grand Slam title.

The floodgates of the debate as to who is the Greatest Of All Time is now wide open. Federer makes a strong case because he now holds the all-time singles grand slam titles record at 15. And last month, became just the six person to win all grand slam events titles..

The 2009 Wimbledon got on an inauspicious start with the pull-out of defending champ and world no. 1 Rafael Nadal due to injuries. Without Rafa, the road to the title was expected to be easier for Federer. He practically breezed his way to the finals to face Roddick, a foe he has dominated. And everyone thought the title is already in bag.

Everyone was right in the result, not with the way it was achieved.

When I caugght the telecast on cable, it was Roddick who was up a set and leading on the second set tie break 6 - 2. Seeing that score, I already conceded the set to Roddick and check on some other programs. When I came back, it was all leveled up.

With that, I thought Roddick will just implode. More so when Federer won the third set on another tie break. But Roddick played better in the fourth, taking it 6 - 3. The fifth set was a marathon.

Federer had many break opportunities to break Roddick in the match but Roddick kept coming up with booming serves and great plays. I guess it just but fitting that Federer wins after breaking Roddick for the only time in the match.

I salute Roddick for a great match and a great post-match humour. The way each held serve is phenomenal and they kept at it all throughout that is good for the fans and the sport.

Last year finals between Rafa and Fed was called the greatest ever played. This years final comes a close second only because last year featured a better rivalry and the top men in tennis.

Is there anything more to aspire for Federer? A calendar grandslam and a grand slam final win over Rafael Nadal on any surface.

Kobe Bryant & Lakers finish off Orlando

Kobe Bryant finally won his fourth championship and first without Shaq as he led the Los Angeles Lakers in finishing off the Orlando Magic in Game 5 of the 2009 NBA Finals.

Bryant and the Lakers did not wait to comeback to their homecourt for Game 6 as the franchise notched its 15th championship. As expected, Bryant received the Bill Russel trophy.

Despite his earlier pronouncement, Dwight Howard was not able to come big and help his team prolong their magical season.

Orlando's outside shooting that helped them reach the Finals was never a factor against the much hungrier Lakers. Hopefully, Dwight Howard and the rest of the team will be motivated as the Lakers after they lost last year to the Celtics.

Mayweather-Marquez Fight Postponed

I read from inquirer.net that the scheduled Mayweather-Marquez fight in July will be postponed because Mayweather injured his rib during training.

If this fight will be moved, chances of a Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown will be early next year. Or maybe, this postponement will paved the way for a Pacquiao-Marquez III?

We all have to wait for further developments.

Steve Nash as NBA Finals correspondent of the David Letterman Show

I just caught the latter part of Hardball's replay of their June 12 show where in they featured Steve Nash as the 2009 NBA Finals correspondent for the David Letterman Show. Gosh, I have been missing a lot.

I am a big fan of Steve Nash and still feels bad about him and my phoenix suns not making the playoffs this season. And I am blaming Steve Kerr for that!

Nash, still being part of the NBA Finals, is some consolation for us fans. I just hopes he gets at least one championship ring before he hangs up his jersey.

Roger in Paris | Federer captures French Open as his 14th Grandslam Title

Roger Federer finally triumphs in Paris as he captured the elusive French Open Men's Singles Tennis grandslam crown after beating the tournament's surprise Robin Soderling in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 and 6 - 4.

After falling short against Clay court king Nadal for the past 3 years, Federer finally won the one grandslam he has yet to win not until now. In the process, he adds two more achievement in his already illustirous Tennis career.

The French Open crown he just won is his 14th grandslam single title that equals the record held by another tennis great Pete Sampras. I guess more importantly Federer became only the sixth man to complete a career grandslam.

Andre Agassi, the last man who completed a career grandslam and coincidentally also in Roland Garros in Paris, was the man who presented the trophy.

Federer can thank his finals opponent in clearing an easier route for him towards the crown. Soderling, the losing finalist, is the one who upset and eliminated four-time and defending champion Rafael Nadal in the earlier rounds.

Soderling played the best tennis week of his career but only managed to threaten the eventual champ on the second set. Federer needed a tie break to win the set against him.

The magnitude of the victory has Federer tearful while the Swiss national anthem is being played. Truly, he can now be at ease for the rest of his career.

And because Sampras never won the French Open, Roger Federer is now more aptly called, albeit still arguably, the greatest tennis player of all time.

Missing out on some Sporting events

The past few days made me busy and prevented my from watching ongoing sporting events and blogging about it.

The billiards or pool season had already begun but I failed to watch the Philippine Open 10 ball pool championships. I saw a part of Womens' World Ten ball championships but never got to know who won. Perhaps a consolation, I saw one match of Shannel Lorraine. Hehehe!!!

I also failed to watch the game clinching Game 6 of the eastern finals between the Orlando Magic and the Cleveland Cavaliers. I also missed Game 1 of the 2009 NBA Finals. Waaaaaaaaahhh!!!!

The coming week is more likely to be just the same. :(

2009 NBA Playoffs Conference Series

Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers finished off the Denver Nuggets 119 - 92 in Game 6 of their Western Conference Finals Series and earn a return trip to the NBA Finals.

Meanwhile on the East, the Magic will try to advance to the NBA Finals since the Shaq and Penny days.

The Magic still needs the series 3 - 2 after Lebron James delivered another sublime playoff performance in Game 5 to extend the Cavs season. Finally, King James' men showed up when it matters the most - most notably Boobie Gibson.

French Open 2009 : Federer Advance to 3rd Round

I was switching channels; on CS9, Game 5 of Magic-Cavs and on Studio 23 the French Open 2009 featuring World No.2 Roger Federer in the 2nd round.

The first time I went to Studio 23, the score on the bottom displays Federer won the first set. And they where about to start the second set.

When I came back, it was a set apiece.

On my next return, Federer's opponent was up 4 - 1 in the third set. And I thought oh-oh... Federer is about to lose... again. My theory that I am jinxing Federer grew by the minute. And honestly I have resigned to accept the fact that Federer would lose again.

So, I just decided not to switch channels anymore but I can't helped it. Hehehe!!! To my surprise, when I returned to Studio 23, Federer is now up 6 - 5.

Probably, the comeback of Federer demoralized his opponent and fought not as persistent as before.

In the fourth set, Federer prevailed to moved on to the third round.

2009 NBA Playoffs | Magic pulls thru, leads the Cavs 3-1

The Orlando Magic takes a commanding 3 - 1 series lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers after Lebron James missed the potential game-winning three 116 - 114 in OT of Game 4 in their Eastern Conference Finals series in the 2009 NBA Playoffs.
King James sent the game into overtime, hitting two free throws to tie it at 100 apiece.

In overtime, Dwight Howard muscled his way inside for 10 points to lead the way and offset the spectacular James who as usual carried the Cavs including knocking in a wicked fade away three to keep the Cavs in the game.

When Lewis made only one of two free throws, 116 - 114 with 3.2 ticks to go, everyone knew that the Cavs would go to James to win the game just like in Game 2. It was a good thing that the Cavs have no timeout to call to setup a better play. James fired the shot some steps after the halfcourt line and fell short.

In the first half, King James and the King's men showed up. They even had a run before the first half ended to have a 58 - 50 lead. In the second half, the Magic knocked threes and the played good enough defense. The King's men again failed to support James.

In the end, Lebron and the Cavs facing the tall task of coming back from a 3 - 1 series deficit, last done I believe by my Phoenix Suns against Kobe's Lakers.

It is really plain to see why the best team in the regular season is on the ropes against the Magic. It's the supporting cast to James that is missing especially in the crucial moments of the game.

I was putting off writing another entry about the NBA Playoffs until this game because I thought it would also be 2-2 like in the West. That way I get to write only one post for both conferences' finals series.

Well, the Magic are now closing in in returning to the NBA Finals since 1995. That seems to be apparent if Mo Williams' foray to fortune telling or the James supporting casts' performance do not improve soon.

2009 NBA Playoffs | Nuggets beat Lakers, West Conference Finals 1-1

No Escape this time for Kobe & company at the Denver Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Lakers to even up their Western Conference Championship series 1 - 1 in the on going 2009 NBA Playoffs

I just checked the game on NBA Gamecast, and here is the final score.

I was out of the house early, gone to register in a short course and pay some bills. That is why I did not catch Game 2 of the West Finals between the Nuggets and the Lakers on TV.

Good thing I went to a bank in SM City North Edsa. Because I just learned that the activity area in THE BLOCK is now one of the free wifi locations in the Metro.

After I connected to the free wifi, I went to NBA Gamecast. Chauncey Billups clinch the game at the free throw line.

With the series going to Denver, the Nuggets are riding on a big confidence boost. The series could have been 2 - 0 in their favor now.

For most of the season, the Lakers are favored to take the West again. But Houston perhaps made the Lakers doubt themselves in their conference semifinal series.

If Denver defends their homecourt for games 3 and 4, I think they will be in the finals.

2009 NBA Playoffs | Lewis, Magic shock Cavs in Eastern Conference Finals Game 1

Rashard Lewis knocked the game winning three as the Orlando Magic toughed out a Game 1 upset over highly favored Cleveland Cavaliers 107 - 106 to start the 2009 NBA Playoffs Eastern Conference Finals.

Coming from a great Game 7 win over dethroned champs Celtics, the Magic again displayed mental toughness throughout the second half to defeat Lebron James and the Cavs to steal home court advantage in the series.

Coach Stan Van Gundy's gameplan worked as they allowed Lebron James to work hard for the bulk of the Cavs offense and limiting James' supporting cast to standing and watching most of the game.

James just put the lead back to the Cavs with a three point play that led to Dwight Howards sixth and last foul. But Rashard Lewis knocked in the game winning three. In the Cavs final play, James passed to a teammate who failed to connect from the outside. A jump ball resulted in the battle for the loose ball with just a second left in the game between Hedo Turkoglu and Lebron James. James tapped the ball to Williams who failed to connect from the top of the key.

The Cavs are coming from a long lay-off after breezing through the first two rounds sweeping the Pistons and the Hawks in double digit wins. In their first taste of competitive playoff atmosphere, James' cast never got going like they used to do in the regular season.

James scored 49 points but it appeared that carrying cavs the entire game took its toll on him somehow. He missed 3 free throws and had cramps at the end of the game.

The Magic meanwhile had a great team effort in defense and getting great games from Lewis, Howard and Turkoglu plus solid support from Pietrus and Alson.

2009 NBA Playoffs | Magic End Celtics Repeat Bid

The Orlando Magic finally put an end to the Boston Celtics' bid for a second consecutive championship, dethroning the champs with a convincing 101 - 82 Game 7 win right at the Celtics storied homecourt.

The win was a sort of statement in itself that the Magic is indeed a contender for the crown as they have shown in the regular season. Now they have the chance to face Lebron James and the mighty Cleveland Cavaliers that many have picked to reach the NBA Finals.

This time the homecourt advantage and the game 7 pedigree of the Celtics was not enough to stage a comeback hold off the young and hungry Magic team.

Rajon Rondo just beat the third quarter buzzer to pull the Celtics within five points of the Magic, 61 - 65. But the Magic scored 8 straight points at the start of the fourth to widen the gap.

All seemed is not yet lost when Dwight Howard picked up his fifth personal foul, forcing Van Gundy to sitt him on the bench. When Ray Allen knocked off a trey to cut the lead the Magic's lead to 12, I thought the comeback is again on.

But the threat was quickly fanned out by Hedo Turkoglu 3 and I could not watch anymore.

I was so accustomed with the Celtics coming big down the stretch especially in their homecourt. Perhaps I read too much off Bill Simmon's column. I actually waited for that magic feeling that something special is about to happen for the Celtics.

There wass magic alright but not from the champs. Rather, it comes from the guys from Orlando. They have learned they lesson well. This time they were ready for the champs. Ooops... the Celtics are now just former champs.

2009 NBA Playoffs | Davis' gamewinner ties Celtics-Magic series 2 - 2

Glen "Big Baby" Davis nailed a jumper at the buzzer to lift the Bostic Celtics to a 95 - 94 win over the Orlando Magic to even their 2nd round Eastern Conference Semifinal Series, 2 all, in the 2009 NBA Playoffs.

Down by one with only 11.3 seconds left, the defending champs were facing a dark prospect of going down 1 - 3 in the series. The Magic were able to clamped down on Allen and was successful in forcing the ball out of Pierce's hands but they failed to cover Davis making the game-winning jumper as time expired, stunning all the Magic fans at their homecourt.

Finally, I was able to catch an exciting game on these NBA Playoffs live and not just from highlight reels.

I honestly thought that the Celtics would lose when Pierce passed the ball. Instead, I was surprised in a good way to see Davis pull through and the men in green still prevailing in the game.

Later in an interview, Davies credited the extra effort he made in shooting practice and believing in himself making it as the key to that shot.

The champs will definitely have momentum on their side going to Game 5 in Boston.

Manny Pacquiao KOs Hatton in Round 2

This is an obligatory Pacman post. It's way late but as a Filipino, I still want to savor the moment.

I'm relishing the thought that Manny Pacquiao silenced the throngs of Hatton fans that watched the Battle of East vs West in Las Vegas. Same with proving wrong the loud-mouth Floyd Mayweather Sr.

In prefight interviews, I believe Hatton basically claimed that he will shock the world by beating Pacquiao. True, we were shocked. Unfortunately, it was Hatton who was down in the canvass in just two rounds.

Prior to the fight, almost all of boxing predicted that Hatton will be a tougher foe than the Golden Boy considering he is undeafeted in the 140 lbs division. Come to think of it, an aging De la Hoya was able to last for 6 rounds with the Pacman.

Manny, you know, there is another loudmouth named Floyd Mayweather Jr. out there. Of course, you know what to do...

Pacquiao vs Hatton Fight, just hours away

It's a long weekend here in the Philippines and the whole country is eager in anticipation for the fight of the year - Pacquiao vs Hatton - where the Junior Welterweight 140 lb championship and the right to be called pound-for-pound champion is at stake.

Fans are all excited because the reputation of these two pugilists promises to be an action-packed bout from the opening bell and that it will end with a knockout. I sure hope when that happens, I will see the familiar scene of Pacquiao kneeling in a corner thanking God for another spectacular win.

Just like his surname, Pacquiao has the collective "wholesale" backing of all Filipinos. One of the few times our nation has shown unity. Venues showing the fight in pay-per-view are making a killing in ticket sales like mall cinemas and restaurants. Those who can not afford to pay can still get lucky and catch the fight live if their local leaders set up free viewing in city gyms. For the rest, they would rely at the advertisement-thick coverage of free local TV stations.

Just like his last fight, I hope my friend in the US will again mirror the Pacquiao - Hatton fight via webcam in Yahoo Messenger. Hehehe!!!

Boxing experts and analysts pick Pacquiao to come out on top slightly ahead of Hatton. Whatever the case, I feel proud that Manny is drawing consideration as the greatest Asian boxer because of his success in winning championships in differenet weight classes. A win will surely put an exclamation point to that argument.

Moreover, the winner of the bout is virtually assured of an equally lucrative bout against recently unretired Floyd Mayweather Jr.

My bet, Pacquiao over Hatton in 8 rounds.

PBA All Star Week 2009

The PBA All Star Week 2009 turned out to be one of the more entertaining renditions of the Philippine Basketball Associations annual all-star festivities in recent memory.

Paul Artadi of Baranggay Ginebra Gin Kings captured the Obstacle Challenge in style over fellow speedsters L.A Tenorio and Egay Billones. Artadi, dunking to start his turn, was a good treat for the fans. Defending champ Willie Miller failed to win the event for the fourth consecutive time.

James Yap, followed his former UE teammate Artadi by capturing the Three Point Shootout. Saving his best for last, Yap delivered a memorable performance in the finals. He shot all the balls in the first rack helping him run away with the title over hotshots Dondon Hontiveros and Gary David.

Defending champ Ren-ren Ritualo could have been in the finals but one of his 2-point shot was nullified because he shot it before completing all the 1-point balls.

Larry Fonacier started the event but unfortunately was made to repeat his turn because a ball in the fourth rack fell to the floor. If I was part of the committee, I wouldn't make Fonacier repeat his turn. Fonacier's score on his second turn was way low than the first, obviously he had already lost the rythm and some legs.

Also, I think it's a wrong decision to have a voice-over commentator while participants are completing their turn in the three point competition.

The slam dunk contest seemed destined to be a bore with the not-so-good dunks and missed dunks from the imports. David Noel, Baranggay Ginebra's import prevailed over San Miguel Beermen's G. Freeman and Sta. Lucia's Anthony Johnson.

KG Canaleta failed to follow his former UE Teammates (Artadi & Yap)as he lost in the local slam dunk division to Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Jarred Dilinger pumped up the crowd with his Pacman boxing attire but failed to complete his dunk.

Only the dunk off saved the event. David Noel delivered two perfect dunks over Gabe Norwood. The last one was doing a cart wheel and back flip before dunking the ball. He actually used that in winning the 2006 NCAA slam dunk competition.

Perhaps it would have been more exciting if Norwood was made to dunk first in the second round of the dunk off. Well, that's just me.

Noel capped the event with a just a step after the free-throw line dunk to the delight of the crowd.

UAAP Badminton [Now] on Philippine TV

Badminton in the Philippines gains a much needed exposure as the UAAP Season 71 Badminton competitions was shown on Studio 23.

I'm glad I caught some badminton action on free TV last Wednesday afternoon. It is the only sport I play nowadays. More telecasts like it would revive interest in the sport that peaked some 3 years ago.

Normally, I catch badminton games only on cable TV. Where I see Europeans, Chinese, South Koreans, Malaysians and Indonesians play quality badminton.

I still remember the first few times my friends invited me to their smashing gigs. Almost all badminton centers we went to were full. In one instance, we lost a reservation because we arrived late. Our supposed to be "reserved" court was given to another group.

But nowadays, I can not say the same. Although there are times the venue we play at still get fully occupied.

The young players featured in the competition is a ray of hope for Philippine badminton. More importantly, if more kids would take the sport, the country would have lots of talented players from the grassroots level and future Filipino international players would surely come.

Action Packed April 19 - A sportsfan's dream

Come Sunday, sportsfans like me will be treated to an action-filled April 19.

The first ever double world title fight in the Philippines dubbed "The Flash and The Furious" will be held at the historic Araneta Coliseum.

The 2009 NBA Playoffs will start on the same day.

As well as UFC 97 Redemption.

Hopefully, I could watch and enjoy them all and blog about all of them as well.

In this historic bout, Nonito "the Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. will stake his IBF Flyweight crown against Raul "the Cobra" Martinez while Bryan "the Hawaiian Punch" Viloria will challenge Ulises Solis for the IBF Light Flyweight belt.

The boxing event will also feature two up and coming Filipino Boxers in Denver "the excitement" Cuello and Sonny Boy Jaro. GMA - 7 will show the bout at 1 pm.

Even without my Phoenix Suns, the fan in me eagerly awaits the 2009 NBA Playoffs to see who will emerge as champions.

With the MVP award almost assured, is this the year of Lebron's first championship ? Will Kobe and the Lakers complete the job this time around? Are the Boston Celtics capable of defending their crown without leader Kevin Garnett? Or will another team come from nowhere to lay claim on the championship? Monday after the 2009 Masters Golf Championships at Augusta, Georgia, the golf world congratulates another first time Green jacket wearer, Angel Cabrera of Argentina.

Cabrera, also known as El Pato, won his second major championship title after making a par on the second playoff hole against a fading Kenny Perry. Becoming the first South American Masters champ and the lowest-ranked player to win the Masters.

The tournament started with pundits and golf expert expecting a showdown between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson for the coveted green jacket. Well, they did have a showdown to the delight of the gallery that followed them when they are paired for the final round. Only that their last ditch effort both fell short.

Looking back, they did were not able to capitalize on the first and second round where the famed Augusta Golf course relented low scores.

Coming off a dramatic win at the Arnold Palmer invitational, Woods was expected, as usual, to stomp his class over the field, me definitely included. But for some reasons, he seemed to had a difficult time with the course compared with the other players in the opening rounds.

How I wish, there was a player who called out to Tiger and pissed him off. Probably, that would drive Tiger nuts to win in Augusta.

I think he, himself, would be pissed off with his performance on the first major of the year, and release his frustrations when he defends his US Open title. This time with two good knees.

Tiger Woods is Back, Wins Arnold Palmer Invitational in Dramatic Come-from-behind Fashion

Tiger Woods is finally back... back to winning. After knee surgery and two tournaments this year, Woods captured the Arnold Palmer Invitational for his first victory of the year in a dramatic come-from-behind win - with a flair we are so accustomed to see in him.

I was fortunate to tuned in and catch Woods making par at the 14th hole still down one stroke to Sean O'hair. But when he connected on a long birdie putt at the 15th to tie it, I felt that all the momentum is on Tiger's side and Sean O'hair would need to make something special to turn the tide.

At the 16th, O'hair's ball landed on the water and Tiger finally took the lead. On the 17th, Tiger had a bogey because his ball fell on a difficult lie on after the tee.

It was tied going into the last hole but you can sensed from the crowd that they knew Tiger would win.

And he did in superb style. Tiger birdied the last hole to capture his sixth title in this event and 66th win in his PGA Tour Career.

He started the day 5 shots back and his win proved onced again he could come back to win a tournament although he has yet to do that in major championships.

The win is definitely a big boost as he prepares for his favorite golf major championship, The Masters on April.

Japan defends their World Baseball Classic crown, tops South Korea

Japan finally outlasted resilient South Korea in the 10th inning to defend their crown and capture the 2009 World Baseball Classic 5 -3 in a classic battle of two of most fundamentally sound baseball teams in the world.

Ichiro Suzuki carried the Samurai side over the pesky South Koreans with a 2 RBI double in the top of the 10th to put Japan up 5 - 3. Japanese phenom, 22 year-old Yu Darvish finished off the South Koreans with a strike out after giving the tying run on the 9th inning.

For most of the game, Japan outhit the Koreans. But the Koreans' defense kept holding out from breaking away.

Ogasawara started the scoring with single RBI on the top of the 3rd inning. With bases loaded and only one out, the Koreans came out with a double play to end the inning only down by 1.

On the next inning, Japan once again threatened to have a wide lead but the Koreans came up with a strikeout double play.

Fired up with their great defense, the South Korean sides tied the game up when Shin Soo Choo homers again Iwakuma who retired the first 11 batters he faced, striking out 4.

At the bottom of the sixth inning, Iwakuma walks lead off hitter y k lee. Then Iwakuma and Catcher Jojihma came up with a strikeout double play of their own to end the inning.

On the top of the 7th inning, Kataoka leads with a single and stoles 2nd base. Ichiro then produces a perfect bunt to reach first base and move Kataoka to 3rd. Nakajima singles next to bring Kataoka home, Japan up 2 - 1. The Koreans once more came up with a spectacular catch and another double play to end Japan's threat. The Korean batters that came to the plate all flew out to the field with Uchikawa coming up with two left field catches.

Japan added another run on the top of the 8th with a sac fly RBI for a 3 - 1 lead. Korea answers back with a sacrifice fly of their own to inch closer 3 - 2.

Sugiuchi replaces starting pitcher Iwakuma at the plate to finish the inning and protect the one run lead.

At the top of the 9th, Ichiro leads with a double off pitcher C Y Lim. Second Baseman Y M Ko takes a way a base hit from Nakajima with a spectacular diving catch and holds Ichiro on 2nd base. Then the Koreans intentionally walks Aoki. Kenji Johjima flies out to center while Ogasawara struck.

On the 9th inning, Japan put the young phenom Yu Darvish to close out the Koreans.

After striking out the first batter, Darvish yields two walks before striking out another. With only one out left, Bum Ho Lee hits an rbi single to tie the game.

Darvish makes amend by striking out the next batter and game goes to extra innings.

Uchikawa leads in the 10th inning with a single. Inaba grounds out next but moves Uchikawa on scoring position. Iwamura connects on a base hit as Japan once again has two on bases. Pinch hitter Kawasaki flies out to center.

Then it was Ichiro's moment.

After being down 2 strikes, Ichiro comes up with a 2 RBI double to give the lead back to Japan. He even stole 3rd base. The next Japanese batter was hit on the hips was also able to steal 2nd base. Aoki was intentionally walked to load the bases. But Jojihma struck out again to end their inning.

Yu Darvish once again on the mound to close out the Koreans and quickly gives a lead-off walk. But he struck out the next batter, forces the next batter to fly out to center and then finished off the koreans with another strikeout.

Japan wins the World Baseball Classic 2009 and the first two.

Daisuke Matsuzaka once again was named MVP of the tournament after going 6 - 6 in his WBC career and now 2 of 2 MVPss. But definitely for the finals, Ichiro should be the best player.

Japan, S. Korea in All-Asian World Baseball Classic 2009 Finals

Defending World Baseball Classic champion Japan, trounced a sloppy team Team USA 9 - 4 to arrange an all-asian finals with South Korea for the crown.

When I switched on the TV, I was disappointed to miss Dice K on the mound. Japan was up 6 - 2 on the top of the eight inning.

Team USA managed to score two runs to threaten at 6 - 4 aided by a fielding error of Aoki. But on the bottom of the same inning, the americans surrendered three more runs.

>Yu Darvish, Japan's pitching phenom, closed out the Americans on the top of the ninth.

Daisuke Matsuzaka, picked up the win to remain perfect in 6 starts in WBC history. It was on the same tournament that Dice K got the attention of major league baseball that led to his signing with the Boston Red Sox. He helped the Sox capture the 2007 World Series.

I was browsing the worldwide leader in sports and my attention was drawn to a photo.

Is he a filipino? Is he Japeth Aguilar?

I thought I saw a filipino among college players tugging each other's arms in the photo. And I was right. I checked the roster and it was in fact, Japeth Aguilar who played for the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP.

He is a senior for the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers who upset fifth seeded Illinois in this game.

ABS-CBN will [no longer] cover Pacquiao-Hatton Fight on May

UPDATE: [Mar. 23, 2009] Manny Pacquiao, like a prodigal son, reverted back to Solar Sports and GMA-7 as his media partners through a formal announcement. ABS-CBN issued a statement that they will respect Pacquiao's decision.

UPDATE: [Mar. 20, 2009] Apparently, the announcement by Pacman in national TV about his choice of network is without the blessing of Solar Sports and GMA-7. The two entities are the media partners of Pacquiao prior to his surprise announcement. Based on the two's statements, Pacquiao would have to win a side fight of sorts, for his desire of airing his fights via abs-cbn to come thru.

ABS-CBN network will be the network who will bring the Manny Pacquiao - Ricky Hatton fight on May 2, 2009.

Manny Pacquiao had another change of heart. This time, its about the network who will cover his fight against Ricky Hatton here in the Philippines.

Either network will actually do since broadcast is free. They are just the same in flooding their coverage with a lot of advertisements. But personally, I would like it better if its GMA 7 because my TV has a stronger reception of it.

I just hope that the decision would not be a distraction to Pacman's training.

World Baseball Classic Results: Team USA comes back in 9th against Puerto Rico

Team USA delivered a dramatic comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Puerto Rico, 6 - 5 and advance in the 2nd World Baseball Classic to face Venezuela in the semifinals.

I caught the World Baseball Classic featuring Team USA against Puerto Rico at the top of the night inning, with Puerto Rico still up 4 - 3 with 1 out and Vasquez on plate.

Then Vasquez hits a line drive center off pitcher Broxton that Derek Jeter could not handle allowing Rios to score a big insurance run. Puerto Rico 5, Team USA 3.

Facing eliminations, Team USA proved to be up to the task.

First, Victorino leads off with the single off Puerto Rican closer Romero. Then Bryan Roberts hits another single.

Jeter then flies out to right field as Victorino moves to third base. Jimmy Rollins steps up on the plate next. Romero quickly fell behind with 2 balls.

Bryan Roberts then electrified the crowd with a stolen base, reaching second. This puts more pressure on Romero as he walks Rollins to load all the bases with only one out.

Puerto Rico's manager tried to stave off Team USA's rally and replaces Romero with Fernando Cabrera. But the damaged has been done.

Cabrera surrenders a walk to Kevin Youkilis and Team USA walks closer to Puerto Rico, 4 - 5.

David Wright comes to plate. With the pressure mounting, Cabrera throws two balls to fell behind and the bases still loaded.

After a strike, Wright hits one a fair ball on the right to complete Team USA's dramatic comeback,6 - 5.

2008-2009 NBA Results: Kobe, Lakers show Spurs who is WEST boss

Without a doubt, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers is head and shoulders above everyone else in the Western Conference.

Kobe Bryant played the part he loved the most, closing out the San Antonio Spurs right at their homecourt and led the Lakers in stomping its class in the Western Conference, 102 - 95

For much of the season, the Lakers and Spurs are 1 and 2 respectively in the West. Kobe and the Lakers showed it could remain that way.

A spectacular first quarter and a focused Bryant are all that is needed to top the Spurs in this game. The win clinched the Pacific division title for the Lakers and a play-off spot.

More importantly, it proved that the way to the finals will go through the Lakers.

Also, it showed why the Spurs will be dangerous come playoff time. Manu Ginobili will return. The Lakers did not have an easy time beating the 2007 champs even without Ginobili.

DLSU captures UAAP 71 Womens Volleyball Crown

In four pressure-packed sets, the De La Salle University Lady Spikers fought everything the defending champions FEU Lady Spikers have to offer prevailing in the end as graduating Team Captain Manilla Santos led them to the UAAP 71 Womens Volleyball Crown.

A packed The Arena in San Juan played host to the sudden death Game 3 of the UAAP Women's Volleyball Finals.

DLSU showed early of the things to come with a 25 - 19 first set win.

FEU, champions as they are, battled right back in the second set. Injured Shaira Gonzales inspired the Lady Tamaraws at the start and raced to a 12 - 7 lead. Jack Alarca and Stephanie Mercado tried to fight back but Mica Morada pushed FEU on top. Setter April Jose finished off the set with one of her wicked and deceiving dumps, 25 - 18.

Set 3 started close but Lady Spikers started to distance themselves agains the Lady Tamarraws at 14 - 10 after blocking FEU star Rachel Daquis. FEU inched closer 14 - 15 after a misreception of DLSU. But the Lady Spikers rattled the next five points, 20 - 14. But FEU is far from conceding the set away, threatening last 21 - 23 on Morada's beuatifully executed kill. Daquis then sends the ball outside and Cruz finishes of the set with kill, 25 - 21. DLSU up 2 sets to 1

Now, the pressure mounts. After another close start on Set 4, DLSU erected a 12 - 8 lead. but FEU was able to tie things up at 16 all. Alarca restores the lead back to DLSU 18 - 16. Gonzales helps FEU side, tying again at 19 - all.

DLSU denies Daquis and FEU at the net three consecutive times to go ahead 20 - 19. Team captain Manilla Santos scores 3 crucial points to help DLSU reach championship point. And as Vivas sent the ball wide, DLSU celebrated on the floor.

Manilla Santos, on her last year cried over jubilant Coach Ramil, and was judged the MVP of the Season.

FEU, denied of an unprecedented 30th Women's volleyball crown, settled for the first runner up.

Rachel Daquis of FEU is arguably the star of UAAP volleyball, receiving applause every so often or even just serving and receiving her runner up medal. Too bad she will be graduating.

Oh, before I forgot, there is still Shaira Gonzales to look forward next year. ;)
It is really a good thing that volleyball especially the womens, is gaining some popularity. Kudos to ABS CBN sports for bringing women's volleyball on TV.

Hardball convinced me to create a Facebook account

My favorite local sports show, HARDBALL, proved to be the last straw that compelled me to open a Facebook account.

I really welcome as great sports news that sports talk show being hosted by wacky trio of Bill Velasco, Jinno Rufino and Boyet Sison is finally seen on free local TV via Studio 23 from Mondays thru Thursdays. I used to catch them only at my gf's house as it was previously and solely aired at ANC Channel every 10:30 pm on weekdays.

Having seen that they interact with sports fan through their facebook account, I decided to finally create my own Facebook account. Hoping someday my sports ideas would one day see the light of broadcast TV.

My primary photo looks dark on TV though. :)

Nadal get past Federer for 1st Aussie Open Title

Rafael Nadal is already the number 1 player in the world. He once again showed that to Federer and the whole tennis world.

The ever improving Nadal defeated Roger Federer in another epic five set final to capture his first ever Australian Open singles title and thwarting Federer's attempt to equal Pete Sampras's grand slam record.

From claycourts to grass and now, even in hardcourts, Nadal continued to lord over Federer.

And this one really, really hurts for Federer and his fans including me. Nadal has so vastly improved in all surfaces that perhaps it is eating away Federer inside.

Federer cried during the awarding ceremonies. I can't tell if its the pain of loss or being overwhelmed by the fans appreciation. I guess it was the former. While watching, I silently wish the crowd would just stop applauding in respect of Federer.

When you have soared so high, the paid of downfall would be so much painful, as in the case of Federer. After years of dominance, he now suffers what his opponents felt when he made that amazing run of grand slam crowns.

The bottomline I think is that, Nadal improved while Roger remained the same. Perhaps, its now the best time for Federer to analyze what made Nadal this dominating. A full time coach for example.

All is not lost however. Sorry, I am just a die hard Federer fan. He should win the French Open against Nadal. That will be the only redemption I can think of for him.

As for Nadal, he is now making his run to the be the greatest of all time for himself. If only, Federer can do something about it.

The tennis world could not have wanted it any better. Right in the first grand slam final of year comes the match everyone yearned.

The 2009 Australian Open Grand Slam Single Tennis finals will be disputed by the Number 1 tennis player in the world, Rafael Nadal and Number 2, Roger Federer.

Roger Federer continues his quest for Tennis immortality against the man who upended him last year. He will seek his 14th Grand slam title to equal Pete Sampras's record and 4th Aussie Open singles title. At the same time, get some measure of revenge against Nadal.

Rafael Nadal, the number one player in the world is seeking to conquer all surfaces. Initially rose to fame for reigning in clay, Nadal showed he can dominate grass last year, ending Federer's reign on it last year in the best Wimbledon final ever. Another win against Federer will now clearly manifest his completeness in all surface. Aside from that, he will include his name into the greatest of all time talk that Federer's name had been hogging for the last five years.

At first glance, Federer is slightly favored. He has won this major thrice and has advantage over Nadal in the past in this kind of surface.Aside from that he had ample of rest after quickly dismissing Andy Roddick in their semifinal. Whereas Nadal, had to go through the longest match ever in Aussie Open history against compatriot Fernando Verdasco to reach the final.

I like Federer to win. If Nadal prevails, then clearly, he really had Federer's numbers. The reason perhaps is that Nadal improved a lot. Federer on the hand, after dominating for so long is perhaps has less idea on what to work upon to defeat Nadal.

Master Federer, A Sayyan?

Perhaps Roger Federer is from the Sayyan race of planet Vegetta. You know... the warrior race that goes stronger after surviving a near-death hard-fought battle.

Federer recovered in time to escape the upset ax thrown at him by Thomas Berdych in the form of a five-setter 4th round 2009 Aussie Open match. On his next match, Federer unleashed the Federer we all have been accustomed to see as he delivered a sublime performance in crashing Juan Del Potro's wishful thinking of beating him, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 in their quarterfinal encounter.

If it's true that what can't kill you makes you stronger, then that applies to Federer. He surely looks stronger than a year ago. His amazing streak of 19 straight semifinal appearance in a grand slam is awesome even with mono last year. I am guessing he's back. I mean, him. Back.

I don't like to jinx him but I am sure Federer would get past Roddick whom he beaten a lot of times and reach the 2009 Australian Open final. Roddick actually won their last match but that's 2008.

2008 - 2009 NBA Results: Celtics puffs Magic, 90 - 80

Defending champion Boston Celtics visited the Orlando Magic in Orlando and show who is still the number one in the East.

Strong play of the Magic recently and the dip in form of the Celtics and Cavaliers allowed the Magic to take the lead in the East as they recorded a franchise record in 41 starts.

The Magic who is shooting well lately was off the mark the whole game allowing the Celtics to cruise to its seventh straight win.
