This is an obligatory Pacman post. It's way late but as a Filipino, I still want to savor the moment.
I'm relishing the thought that Manny Pacquiao silenced the throngs of Hatton fans that watched the Battle of East vs West in Las Vegas. Same with proving wrong the loud-mouth Floyd Mayweather Sr.
In prefight interviews, I believe Hatton basically claimed that he will shock the world by beating Pacquiao. True, we were shocked. Unfortunately, it was Hatton who was down in the canvass in just two rounds.
Prior to the fight, almost all of boxing predicted that Hatton will be a tougher foe than the Golden Boy considering he is undeafeted in the 140 lbs division. Come to think of it, an aging De la Hoya was able to last for 6 rounds with the Pacman.
Manny, you know, there is another loudmouth named Floyd Mayweather Jr. out there. Of course, you know what to do...
It's a long weekend here in the Philippines and the whole country is eager in anticipation for the fight of the year - Pacquiao vs Hatton - where the Junior Welterweight 140 lb championship and the right to be called pound-for-pound champion is at stake.
Fans are all excited because the reputation of these two pugilists promises to be an action-packed bout from the opening bell and that it will end with a knockout. I sure hope when that happens, I will see the familiar scene of Pacquiao kneeling in a corner thanking God for another spectacular win.
Just like his surname, Pacquiao has the collective "wholesale" backing of all Filipinos. One of the few times our nation has shown unity. Venues showing the fight in pay-per-view are making a killing in ticket sales like mall cinemas and restaurants. Those who can not afford to pay can still get lucky and catch the fight live if their local leaders set up free viewing in city gyms. For the rest, they would rely at the advertisement-thick coverage of free local TV stations.
Just like his last fight, I hope my friend in the US will again mirror the Pacquiao - Hatton fight via webcam in Yahoo Messenger. Hehehe!!!
Boxing experts and analysts pick Pacquiao to come out on top slightly ahead of Hatton. Whatever the case, I feel proud that Manny is drawing consideration as the greatest Asian boxer because of his success in winning championships in differenet weight classes. A win will surely put an exclamation point to that argument.
Moreover, the winner of the bout is virtually assured of an equally lucrative bout against recently unretired Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Manny Pacquiao had another change of heart. This time, its about the network who will cover his fight against Ricky Hatton here in the Philippines.
Either network will actually do since broadcast is free. They are just the same in flooding their coverage with a lot of advertisements. But personally, I would like it better if its GMA 7 because my TV has a stronger reception of it.
I just hope that the decision would not be a distraction to Pacman's training.

Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao apparently had a change of heart. So, we will have the much anticipated Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton bout on May 2, 2009 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada as reported in ESPN.
Right after Pacquiao's win over De La Hoya, Hatton's name was immediately mentioned as Manny's next possible opponent. After almost not happening, the fight will push through (May 3 in Manila).
The bout will challenge Pacquiao's hold of the pound-for-pound title and give another chance to Hatton who lost to former pound-for-pound king and now retired, Floyd Mayweather jr.
Reports also say that Pacquiao stands to get the biggest purse of his career. Accordingly, he is guaranteed to receive $12 Million and a 52-48 split of the fight's revenue.
Days ago, reports said that the fight will not push through as Team Pacquiao would not budge in its earlier demand of a higher share for Pacquiao and failed to beat the deadline set by Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaeffer.
Initially, I was in favor of Pacquiao demanding a bigger share because in my opinion, Pacquiao is more popular than Hatton and therefore will bring more to the fight in terms of revenue. But when it comes to pay-per-view, Hatton can pull more revenues because he is so popular in Brittain.
Hatton can use this share of revenues as an added motivation in his training and show fans he deserved more.
This maybe some marketing strategy to generate more buzz for the match. But remember that this also happened in the Pacquiao-De La Hoya bout. Negotiations took longer because of disagreement in money. I hope that Money err.. Manny Pacquiao and his Team will not get use to this tactic. Otherwise, the fans may miss some intriguing fights because of money matters.
Nevertheless, I wish come May 2, the ending will be the same last December - Pacquiao prevailing vs Hatton.
Manny Pacquiao is now the greatest Filipino boxer of all time after he pummeled De La Hoya into submission after 8th rounds of superb boxing display.
Despite the Golden Boy's advantage in size and reach, Pacquiao proved to the world that he is truly the pound-for-pound champ.
Congratulations Manny! Next in line is Hatton.

GMA-7, Solar Sports and RGMA are leaving no stones unturned to bring the Pacquiao - Dela Hoya Dream Match to the whole country on December 7, 2008.
The Dream Match will be covered round by round by DZBB, LS 97.1 and the provincial radio stations under GMA.
*UPDATE* August 30, 2008 - The fight has been confirmed. The two will meet in a non-title welterweight bout on December 6, 2008.
It looks like the Philippines will be treated to an early Christmas treat from its beloved sporting hero, Manny Pacquiao - a December fight with Oscar De La Hoya.
In this article from ESPN, sources said that a match between pound-for-pound king Pacquiao and boxing's biggest draw, Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya might happen in December 6 this year. Same sources said that a formal announcement will be made tomorrow ( Friday, Manila Time).
Reports abound that camp of Golden Boy has long been negotiating with Team Pacquiao for a megabuck fight this year. The negotiation hit a snag though when Pacquiao disagreed with the proposed 70 - 30 split from the fight's revenues. With both fighters crowd-drawers (De La Hoya slightly ahead), revenues are expected to be millions high. Perhaps the camp of De La Hoya conceded to the 60 - 40 split said to be asked by Team Pacquiao.
De La Hoya has said that his next fight will be his last. Being an astute businessman as he is, fans like me may doubt that proclamation as marketing strategy to draw more interest. Fans will surely want to see him fight for the last time.
Pacquiao, having just dominated David Diaz after moving up in weight , will add more jewel to his illustrious boxing career by fighting De La Hoya. Not to mention, the lucrative paycheck it would add to his coffers.
I thank God that the Philippines have a son like Pacquiao who can bring honor to his country. If the camp of De La Hoya really conceded to the desire of Pacquiao's camp, then Manny has really gone to a place no boxer or sports person I know or read of has gone before.
I have doubts if Manny can pull-off a win but I just hope and pray he would deliver a performance that can make us, Filipinos, be more prouder of him.
